English: Bridging the Gap through Communication By Mrs Jennifer Medina Globalization has made the world connected. It is imperative then that every individual must equip herself/himself in order to face the challenges ahead. When the world turns fully into a global village, everyone has to develop effective communication skills in English in order to cope with education or job requirements. Why English? According to the latest statistical study of Nation Master, a massive central data gathering company, there is an estimate of 478,367,213 English speakers worldwide. This data alone makes English the most spoken language around the world. In the Philippines, it was estimated that 35 million Filipinos can speak English. The Constitution is written in English. English is also the medium of instruction in schools. St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina is one such school that uses English as the medium of instruction. The English Area of the Grade School Unit immerses the students in a balanced English literacy program that encompasses the four macro skills-reading, writing, speaking and listening and the emerging skill- viewing. This allows students to participate in a rich literary environment. Students practice the skills they learn through activities such as Readers’ Theater, Choral Interpretation, Book Talk, Book Character Parade, Story Telling, Film Viewing, Puppet Show, Quiz Bee, Declamation and Essay Writing. This complete immersion in literacy provides an opportunity for the students to display their potentials in communication skills. To showcase all the skills learned, November is specially designated the English Month. The following are the activities that students will surely look forward to and enjoy:
